…Aggrieved members won’t destroy party – Okowa

Vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has said that there is no doubt that aggrieved members of the PDP will not destroy the party because they are moving together to reconcile with themselves on the little issues that are left at the moment.

Okowa was speaking while briefing journalists after a reconciliation meeting with the acting chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, at the Delta State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja on Saturday.

The PDP has known no peace since the Rivers State Governor, Nyesome Wike, failed to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate to Atiku Abubakar and was subsequently overlooked for the vice-presidential job in consideration of Delta State governor.

Wike also claimed that the party has been heavily dominated by a section of the country in its leadership structure calling for the resignation of the national chairman of the party, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, for balance, fairness, and justice in the party.

The vice-presidential candidate further stated that there are talks among the governors on how to reconcile the issues, believing that much has been done.

‘’They are members of the party, there is no doubt about that, they will work for the party because this is the home they belong to and I believe that they are not going to destroy it.

“We are talking among ourselves, I believe there is still a little work to do but a lot has been done. There are still issues to be dealt with, that is why you have seen the visit of the leaders of the party and the Board of Trustees.

The vice-presidential candidate pointed out “where we are at the moment is quite difficult for the country, we have never been as divided as this, the level of insecurity and our economy is worst hit, we have never gone this bad. When you look at the issues of education and state of affairs in various states, they have become obvious issues of major concern.

“We don’t want those who will come to the office and start learning on the job, we are in a critical position, so, we need an experienced man who also has the level of humility and calmness, detribalised and ready to take Nigerians together. Because until we understand, whether you are a Christian or Muslim, if we do not get to that level, we may not be able to take Nigeria out of where it is at the moment.

“I believe Atiku Abubakar is the answer for Nigeria because he has committed himself very clearly to Nigerians in his document, ‘My Covenant With Nigerians’, others are still thinking of what they will do.

Earlier in his remarks, acting chairman of the BoT, Senator Wabara, explained that the special reconciliation committee met with the party’s vice-presidential candidate to proffer solutions to the ongoing crisis in the party.

He stated that the reconciliation committee is making progress and will meet the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, and subsequently the Rivers State Governor after meeting with Governors Samuel Ortom, Seyi Makinde, Ikeazu Ikpeazu, and Ifeanyi Ugwanyi, stressing that they have what it takes to resolve the problems.

“The special reconciliation committee of the board of Trustees visits the vice-presidential candidate of our party on the ongoing crisis rocking our party and also to proffer solutions to these issues, we are properly briefed by the Delta State Governor.

‘’The committee is properly enlightened on the issues and we are moving forward. Like I said the last time, we’ve been going around, meeting most of the governors. We will also be meeting with our principal anytime from now and finally meet with Governor Wike in Port Harcourt.
