Former France international and AC Milan striker, Jean-Pierre Papin, has stated that AC Milan and Napoli will miss their lethal forwards Rafael Leao and Victor Osimhen when both teams clash at the San Siro in a Serie A game on Sunday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The duo will miss this contest due to suspension and injury, respectively but the 1991 Ballon d’Or winner believes Osimhen will be sorely missed by the Partenopei.
“His (Osimhen) absence is a bitter blow to his team and the fans tuning in,” Papin was quoted as saying in Football Italia.
“Spalletti will miss Osimhen no doubt.’
Osimhen has been a key figure for Napoli over the past two seasons.
Over the period, their win rate increases from 58.3 per cent to 65.6 per cent when he plays and their goals average goes up to 2.2 from 1.5 per game. Similarly, he’s the only current Napoli player to score 10 or more Serie A goals (16) in the period.
Papin also believes that the match is worth six points in the Scudetto race and Milan are favourites to win the encounter.
“I think Milan are the favourites,” he continued.
“They’re a complete team, enriched by the experience of success and not yet in top condition, when they grow, the rhythms will rise even in Europe. Today they have a calmness that was not always seen last year.”
Milan and Napoli have almost identical records after six Serie A games — four wins and two draws have yielded 14 points — but the latter’s superior goal difference puts them top of the pile.
The Rossoneri’s unbeaten run in the competition stretches to 22 games (15 wins, seven draws), including six victories in a row at home.
The Serie A leaders, Napoli will hope that midfielder Piotr Zielinski can add to his goalscoring record against their opponents from Lombardy.
He has scored more goals against them (four) than against any other team in the competition.
