The 15th edition of The Headies Awards has come and gone, but it has continued to elicit varied reactions. Held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in faraway Atlanta, United States of America, it was a night that celebrated Nigerian music and how far it has come.
However, the ceremony which was hosted by Nollywood actress, Osas Ighodaro, and her Hollywood counterpart, Anthony Anderson, wasn’t entirely smooth sailing. Merrymakers takes a look at the highs and lows of the event
Award ceremonies are usually filled with inspirational speeches and the Headies was no exception. Some of the winners who made speeches that resonated with the audience include Patoranking, Adekunle Gold and Buju.
While receiving the the ‘Next Rated’ award which came with a Bentley car, singer, BNXN (formerly known as Buju), said, “First, I want to thank God. He is the reason I am here and have been able to come this far. I dedicate this (award) to my late mum who died of breast cancer. This is for you, mummy. This is for my family; this is for my management. I also dedicate this award to my girlfriend, Peggy Bramor. I love you.”
The D’banj, Don Jazzy ‘drama’
Singer, D’banj invited his former producer and business partner, Don Jazzy, on stage while receiving his Headies Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the evolution of afrobeats. However, a mild drama played out when Don Jazzy came on stage. Clad in a white native attire, he seemed reluctant to join D’banj, and left the stage abruptly when D’banj jokingly told him to remove his face mask, so the audience could see his face.
Don Jazzy’s reaction generated diverse reactions, especially on social media. When asked by a fan on Twitter why he acted that way, Don Jazzy claimed that he was not feeling well on that day.
Some entertainers who felt they deserved to have won awards took to social media to slam the organisers of the Headies for ignoring them.
Popular producer, Masterkraft, slammed The Headies for refusing to recognise his contributions to the music industry. Taking to his Twitter page, he criticised the organisers for failing to acknowledge his achievements over the years.
Controversial singer, Portable, also boasted that he was more popular than the organiser of the show, Ayo Animashaun, and Goya Menor, who won the ‘Best Street Hip Hop’ award for his song, ‘Ameno Amapiano Remix’.
Recall that Portable was nominated for that category but was yanked off the list when he threatened to kill other nominees in the category if he did not win the award.
Rapper, Vic O, also bashed The Headies for not acknowledging his contributions to the music industry.
On Kcee’s wife and girlfriend
Five Star Music singer, Kcee, won the award for the ‘Best Inspirational Single’ for his song, ‘Cultural Praise’. However, what caught the attention of many was his rather unusual acceptance speech. He had dedicated the award to his wife and girlfriend. He however claimed that he was referring to his wife, who he also sees as his girlfriend. This generated mixed reactions on social media, with many insinuating that his ‘wife’ and ‘girlfriend’ were actually two different persons.
