A United States of America-based disc jockey, Ekpeyong Otu, aka DJ MixMaster Brown, has announced the commencement of his annual afrobeats DJ Competition tagged, ‘Lords of The Mix’.

According to Otu, he started the competition in 2018 to promote afrobeats music, and to inspire disc jockeys, while creating an opportunity for artistes, fans and other industry stakeholders to network.

The competition, which is sponsored by Wazobia Market, is open to all nationalities, regardless of colour or race.

In a statement sent to Merrymakers, MixMaster Brown said, “This is one of the ways by which I am giving back to the industry that I have helped to build in the last 33 years.”

The contestants will be judged by five seasoned DJs, including DJ Jimmy Jatt and DJ Tee, while the top three winners will go home with cash prizes.

The statement added that the judges will be looking out for the DJs with best mix, blend, timing, scratch, beat juggling, speed work, stage craft, and crowd feedback. They must also have not less than five per cent of afrobeats songs on their set.

Past winners of the competition are an African-American, DJ D-Wreck (2018); DJ Krooks (2019) and DJ Silent Killa (2020), both Hispanic.
